Early Childhood Special Needs Teacher
This position may be a .8 FTE or 1.0 FTE based on the needs of the program.
This position reports to the Preschool Coordinator.
Job Summary
The Preschool Teacher is responsible for maintaining a learning environment that assures the well being and safety of all children. The teacher plans instruction that supports the development of the cognitive, emotional, social and physical growth of the children. The position requires that the teacher is able to plan and providing services to individual or small groups of children that require specialized instruction.
Responsibilities and Duties
1. Develops curriculum based on the skills and developmental needs of the students within the class.
2. As a preschool team, plans and implements activities with children between the ages of 2 years, 9 months and five years old consistent with the preschool learning expectations of the district.
3. Supervises, guides and models appropriate behavior and teaching techniques for paraprofessionals under their supervision in the preschool classroom.
4. Works collaboratively with parents and family members to encourage active participation in the program.
5. Participates in evaluations and meetings as requested by the Preschool Coordinator.
6. Participates in formulating reports and individual education plans and adheres to all timelines as indicated. Completes all paperwork including parent/teacher forms, progress notes, transition forms and lesson plans.
7. Uses assessment information for planning activities and individually interacting with children to meet the learning objectives.
8. Maintains accurate and current assessemnt information noting children's progress across all developmental domains utilizing notes, data and/or examples of their work.
9. Encourages and models language expansion, extended learning and problem solving strategies throughout the day.
10. Implements all accommodations/modifications required by a student and indicated on individual health care plans, behavior plans or Individualized Education Program (IEP.)
Qualifications
Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education with coursework in special education
Massachusetts certification in Moderate Special Needs N-9, Early Childhood preferred
Appropriate level teaching experience
Strong background in language and an understanding of developmental education
Experience and/or training in administering and interpreting diagnostic instruments
Experience in teaching in an integrated environment
Knowledge of inclusive education both practically and philosophically
Exhibits strengths in team building and management
Exhibits strengths in parent out reach and support
