Instructional Assistant: 32 hours per week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:45 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. - 30 minute unpaid break; Wednesdays 7:45 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.) Hourly rate of pay is $22.46.
Primary Purpose
The Instructional Assistant supports the general education classroom teacher in preparing instructional materials, assisting with classroom management, and supervising students in a variety of school settings.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrates knowledge of the district’s core curriculum relevant to the assignment.
- Demonstrates an awareness and understanding of the district’s policies, procedures, and core values of diversity and inclusion.
- Demonstrates an understanding of the learning process and the importance of differentiating instruction.
- Under the direction of the classroom teacher, assists with classroom management and instruction.
- Uses materials and instructional strategies appropriate for students’ instructional level.
- Under the direction of classroom and special subject teachers, escorts students to and from classes to activities.
- Anticipates students’ needs and provides appropriate support.
- Facilitates the involvement of students in the daily activities of the school and promotes students’ independence.
- Promotes age-appropriate social behavior and interactions among all students.
- Communicates effectively.
- Accompanies and supervises students on field trips, as assigned.
- Performs clerical tasks to support the classroom teacher.
- Performs tasks assigned by the classroom teacher and/or Principal (e.g., recess supervision, substitute teaching, bus duty, lunch duty, morning and afternoon arrival, etc.).
- Other duties as assigned.
Classroom Assistant Job Summary

This position reports to the building principal and teacher as assigned.
The Classroom Assistant is employed by the district through yearly appointments and is compensated in accordance with hourly rates established by the School Committee.
Responsibilities
Provide assistance in development of classroom activities, retrieval of materials, and coordination of activities. Work with small groups within classroom. Monitor hallways and other activities outside of the classroom (including recess, lunch, and field trips). Complete administrative tasks (copying, laminating, etc.) requested by the classroom teacher. Other tasks and duties as assigned.
